Next General Meeting: Wednesday, November 7

 

Please note: This month we have changed the day of the week for our general meeting. We will be meeting on Wednesday evening, November 7, at St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church (1830 Kirby Road) at 7:30 PM.  

 

Our program will feature a presentation by a representative from Doorways for Women and Families. This is a non-profit organization providing services to the victims of spousal abuse. They offer in-depth support for their clients to facilitate their transition toward economic independence. Share has collaborated with this program by providing furniture to a number of their clients, who typically begin independence with very little in the way of household furniture or furnishings. We will be hearing a description of their ongoing programs, including the range of services provided to these most needy members of our community.  

 

Please plan to attend and bring your friends to a very interesting program. 

President's Message

 

Improvements at Share's Food Pantry  

 

We are happy to report significant progress toward improving the nutritional value of the commodities available through our food pantry. This season we have seen a significant expansion of the amount of fresh produce available to clients as a direct result of expanded gardening activities, in cooperation with local growers and faith communities. In addition, we have become members of the Capital Area Food Bank of Virginia, which enables us to obtain meat, milk, eggs, frozen foods and fresh produce at greatly reduced costs. We have also increased our refrigerator and freezer capacity from donations through our furniture program. While the full implementation details of these new sources of supplies are being worked out, we are sure that the nutritional content of the commodities offered to clients will significantly improve in the weeks ahead.  

 

Congratulations to all the volunteers that made these improvements happen.

Your Support Needed to Make Share's  

Thanksgiving and Holiday Celebration Successful 

 

Please join us in Share-ing the spirit of the holiday season! On Saturday, November 17, we will be distributing grocery store gift cards to our clients to purchase food for their Thanksgiving dinner. Please consider donating grocery gift cards to ensure our clients can enjoy a delicious holiday meal.  

 

Gift cards ($25 value is most useful) can be dropped off during regular food pantry hours, 9:30am-noon on Wednesdays and Saturdays, up to and including the morning of Saturday, November 17.  

 

Our annual Share Holiday Celebration will be held on Saturday, December 8. Our client families will be welcomed into a merrily decorated hall, seated at comfortable tables, served light refreshments, hear live holiday music and be greeted by Santa Claus! As they are leave, they will receive their Wish List gifts, a grocery gift card for a festive holiday meal, and a bag with much-needed personal hygiene supplies that they cannot purchase with food stamps.  

 

Here are some suggestions for ways you can help spread some joy this holiday:  

 

  • Donate Target, Walmart, Macy's, Marshall's, Best Buy, grocery and/or other gift cards to help us fulfill wishes ($25 value is most useful).
     
  • Fulfill a client's personally expressed "Wish." Most are for gift cards that can be purchased at local grocery stores. Other "Wishes" are for specific gifts such as small appliances, linens, house wares, electronics, clothing and toys. They range in price from approximately $25-$30. Every donation will be tagged for that specific individual. Please send an email to Sharewishes@gmail.com to obtain a wish (or wishes) to fulfill.  

 

Gift Cards, and "Wishes" can be dropped off at Share in the McLean Baptist Church, 1367 Chain Bridge Rd. on Wednesdays and Saturdays (except Thanksgiving week) between 9:30 am - 12 pm, starting immediately, and in the Fellowship Hall at McLean Baptist Church, Thursday, December 6th and Friday, December 7th, 11am - 6pm.

Call for Volunteers! 

 

Become a Share Family Assistance Coordinator
If you have a computer and a compassionate heart, and want to help people in need meet their rent, utility, and medical payments, consider becoming a Share Family Assistance Coordinator. Share's Family Assistance Program provides emergency financial assistance to individuals and families within the McLean, Pimmit Hills, and Great Falls area. Volunteers work from home to review requests for assistance and determine eligibility based on Share's policies, authorize payments when appropriate, and enter data into our automated client tracking system. Training is provided. The time required is variable, but falls within 15 to 30 hours per week. Please contact Diane McCullough, at 703-734-3238, for more information.
 

 

Help out as a Clothing Room Volunteer  

Share's clothing room needs more volunteers on Saturdays from 9:30 am to 12 noon to help sort through and organize donated clothing and linens. We need volunteers who can commit to a regular schedule of working at least one or more Saturdays each month. If interested, please contact Mary Helen Malow at mhmalow@yahoo.com.

Volunteers Still Needed for The Rotary Club's  

"Stop Hunger Now" Event

 

Many volunteers are needed on Saturday, November 10, at Redeemer Lutheran Church (at the corner of Chain Bridge Road and Westmoreland Street) to package 250,000 dehydrated, high protein, nutritious meals for distribution in developing countries by Stop Hunger Now, an international relief organization.  

 

Sponsored by McLean Rotary Foundation, this event will also benefit Share's food pantry. Volunteers are asked to bring canned goods or other items on Share's list of needs (see www.shareofmclean.org). To sign up for a two-hour shift (8:30-10:30 am, 11:00-1pm, 1:30-3:30 pm), send a message to Robert Hahne at rlhahne@cox.net. Or just go to Redeemer Lutheran the day of the event. Please join in this act of caring to help feed people worldwide and also those in need in our own community.
