Next General Meeting: Thursday, October 11

 

Our next meeting will be held on Thursday, October 11, 2012 at 7:30 pm at Lutheran Church of the Redeemer. The church address is 1545 Chain Bridge Road, at the intersection with Westmoreland Street, McLean 22101. Gene Durman is the host of the meeting. We are very pleased to have Christopher Fay, executive director of Homestretch, Inc., as our guest speaker. All are welcome. 

Gift Cards for Thanksgiving and Holiday Celebration

 

Share volunteers are busily preparing for the upcoming holidays, with the Thanksgiving gift card distribution planned for Saturday, November 17th, and the Holiday Celebration on December 8th. This year we anticipate that over 250 needy families from our community will participate in our annual celebration.

 

Demand for Share's services is up with this struggling economy. Only with your donations of grocery gift cards are we able to make the holidays a bit brighter for our families. Our budget for these events is less than last year, so donations will make a big difference in the value of grocery cards our clients receive. Your donated gift cards will be gratefully accepted at the Share food and clothing room, located at McLean Baptist Church, on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9:30 to noon, starting in October. We will also be open on Thursday, 12/6, and Friday, 12/7, between 3-6 pm to receive donations.

Call for Volunteers! 

 

  1. Share has an urgent need for additional Family Assistance Coordinators to help individuals and families in our area with emergency financial assistance. This work is very rewarding. Coordinators work from home, via computer and phone, one week every other month.

  2. Additional Furniture Program Schedulers are needed to prepare schedules to pick up of donated furniture and deliver it to those in need. Schedulers work from home, one week, every six weeks.

  3. Sign up now to help Share with Thanksgiving and Holiday Gift Certificate Distribution. We need several volunteers, including Spanish-speakers, to help with the distribution of gift certificates on November 17, 2012, from 9:00 am to noon.

  4. Share's Transportation Program needs more drivers to take older adults to medical appointments. If interested, please contact Marianna Garrett at msgarrett@capaccess.org.  

Partnership with Stop Hunger Now: Volunteers needed

 

Stop Hunger Now is an international hunger relief organization that coordinates the distribution of food and other life-saving aid around the world. Their meal-packaging program utilizes volunteers to package dehydrated, high protein, and highly nutritious meals that are used in crisis situations and in school feeding programs for schools and orphanages in developing countries around the world.

 

The McLean Rotary Foundation is sponsoring a meal-packaging event on Saturday, Nov. 10, at Redeemer Lutheran Church (corner of Chain Bridge Rd. and Westmoreland St.). Working two-hour shifts, volunteers will package rice, soy, dried vegetables, and vitamins, with a goal of packaging 250,000 meals.  

 

Rotary, which has sponsored this event several times during the past few years, has asked all volunteers (hopefully 900 over three shifts) to bring canned goods or other items on Share's list of needs.
